Artificial (Intelligence) Sweetener: Anthropic’s Claude is Coming for Legal Software, For Now
Anthropic – the company behind Claude – has been making inroads into legal for the last little while. On April 21, 2026, Claude ran a webinar called ‘Claude for Legal Teams’, to which 20,000 legal professionals showed up. It’s still available to watch, in archive format.
On May 12, 2026, Anthropic announced that it was releasing 20 connectors and 12 practice-area plugins for legal, for Claude. Bob Ambrogi at LawSites has the full list, as well as some musings. This is kind of a big deal, it’s true. Claude connectors allow Claude to access your data from software tools you use, and also allows for Claude to take actions in those products. A plug-in is effectively a curated bundle, that features connectors, skills and commands meant to allow Claude to act out a specific role or workflow. Couple that with Claude features also being available through Microsoft 365, and Anthropic is very clearly now all up in lawyers’ business.
Of course, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, because Claude is probably the best AI tool available right now, full stop; and, the more that lawyers can use it, the better.
But, the breathless takes about Claude now being a long-term player focused on the legal industry, are probably a bit premature. Microsoft has said and done similar things in the past, and its technology was supposed to take over the legal industry, too – but, that was a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing. This may be a repeat of that. Plus, the total addressable market (to whom a company can sell products) of lawyers, is far smaller than that of legal consumers. So, I suspect that if Anthropic truly makes a push into any legal market – it will be the consumer one, as a replacement for lawyers.
Womp womp. <sad trombone>
