Two-Way Street: LegalTech Connects with Frontier AI

Last week, I addressed how both Anthropic and OpenAI are making inroads into the legal vertical with their own law firm platforms.

Now, that’s a shot across the bow of traditional legaltech vendors, who are actively employing (usually) white-labeled versions of frontier AI tools into their platforms.  But, with frontier AI vendors releasing legal-specific products, that also delivers an interesting new choice for attorneys – who could entirely avoid case management software in favor of these new tools.

Legaltech vendors, then, especially the law practice management software companies, that have traditionally served as the hub for legal operations, now also have a choice to make: Do they continue to gatekeep their systems from frontier AI tools, or risk losing clients who want to use those tools aggressively, to those models?

Currently legaltech vendors are answering those questions in different ways.  Some (like Clio, with its Clio Work platform) are offering their own white-labeled tool.  Others (like Harvey) are building their own LLMs, in an attempt to cut out the frontier tools altogether.  Some (like 8am) have released their own MCP connector (for Claude), to effectively invite the frontier AI models into their platform.  Still others haven’t yet done anything at all in response to the looming threat – thus, potentially allowing third party connections to frontier AI tools, via connection programs, like Zapier.

The pace of technology makes one’s head spin; but, if you’re running a law firm & you want to stay ahead of the curve – it’s important to keep tabs on your technology platform, and how it interacts with artificial intelligence.
